Is it OK if our wedding photographer has never worked at our venue before?

One of the most common questions we are asked by couples is have we worked at their wedding venue before? Maybe a wedding planning checklist suggested the question, maybe you are just curious. I do know one thing if you’re choosing an experienced photographer it won’t matter if they’ve never seen or worked at your wedding venue before.

If asked, I’m always honest. The reality is a quick Google image search and look around the wedding venue’s website usually gives a really good idea of what the venue looks like. Even without this I would not be worried about working at a new venue. After all every venue has always had a first wedding for me there. For first visits at a venue we do one of two things, if you’ve booked us early enough we attend one of the venue’s wedding fairs and have a good look around. If that’s not possible we just arrive extra early on your wedding day. Say hi to the wedding planner who usually gives some tips and we walk around ourselves, referencing all our online research and experience at other venues.

A creative and talented photographer will very quickly spot what we call the ‘obvious shots’ things like a grand staircase and huge window and very quickly come up with their own creative ideas for the location. They’ll then quickly locate the less obvious but equally stunning opportunities, where the sun sets, when the light hits the building and therefore when to take you outside for photos and unique features of your venue.

To be honest it does not matter if your photographer has worked at your venue before. What really matters is if your photographer is experienced and has therefore worked at lots of different venues before. Are they creative? Do they have an eye for light and details? Can they see the creative opportunities that you might not notice yourself? If the answer is yes, then it honestly does not matter if your wedding photographer has never worked at your venue before. Trust in their talent and hard work, it’s their job and they will do everything possible to capture those photos and memories for you. What’s more important is that you feel comfortable with your wedding photographer and trust them.

Visiting a new venue is actually really exciting for us. We’re looking at the venue with fresh eyes and new ideas. We’re normally skipping around excitedly full of ideas for your photos. We’ll be drawing on our experience of previous similar venues. If you’ve booked us, we hope that you’ve fallen in love with our work and trust that new or old venue we will create images and capture memories you will love.
