A wedding content creator is a wedding vendor whose job is to take photos and videos, usually on their phone for you to use on social media. Some will also do things like create TikTok’s and reels for you. Their aim is to capture behind the scenes content of your wedding day, so expect to see the other vendors you have hired in the photos and video they deliver.
Can a content creator replace a wedding photographer or videographer?
The short answer is no. All the wedding suppliers do very different things. Your content creator is very much behind the scenes, capturing things as they are. They wont be helping to organise group photos or planning locations for couple’s photo’s. They will deliver their photos and videos usually within 24hrs. These will be completely unedited. Your wedding photographer will work with you to capture images of your whole day. Including details like your dress and tableware. They will help to organise things like confetti and group photos and make sure you have stunning backdrops for your couple’s photos. The photos will be planned and considered to tell the story of your wedding day and fully edited. These are the images you will print and use a wedding album. A videographer will attempt to to tell the story of your day through a film, capturing movement and sound to create a mini film.
What are the advantages of a content creator?
The only equipment they have is a phone, so in theory they can be discreet and look more like a wedding guest than a professional. Some will create TikTok’s and reels for you, giving you ready made content. They can deliver the content as quickly as 24hrs, giving you instant content to use. They should be aware of the latest TikTok trends and will deliver everything to you unedited so you can add your own filter.
What are the disadvantages of a content creator?
You’ll be adding another camera to the day, with someone who has certain content they want to collect. It’s another phone camera for your wedding photographer to try to avoid or to wait for to finish getting their content before your photographer can work with you. They may potentially be in the background of a lot of your professional photos and video as they will be around you a lot of the time. You may feel overwhelmed with the amount of cameras on you. We work as a husband and wife team, so 2 cameras, add a videographer and then content creator that could 4 or more cameras and people with you throughout the day. This extra person can also make it feel less comfortable to capture those intimate moments with your photographer.
Will a content creator work with my photographer and videographer?
In theory yes, they should. This is where understanding each suppliers role and experience comes into play. We have worked with some fantastic videographers through the years, we’ve also worked with some difficult videographers. The videographers we love to work with know that we need to work as team, we walk together, we try to keep out of each others cameras and we help each other get the content our couples have requested. Videographers we’ve found hard to work with have often been less experienced, they’ve walked down the aisle a meter in front of the couple as they leave the wedding ceremony. Stepped in front of us during key shots instead of working together shoulder to shoulder. They’ve become the 3rd wheel of the couple throughout the day making it impossible to capture photos without them in it. So what about a content creator? If you employ one, you need someone who is aware of other cameras and the role other professionals provide and agree to work as a team.
I want photos quickly, should I hire a content creator?
This depends entirely on your wedding photographer. Whilst a content creator will deliver unedited images and videos in around 24hrs, they may not be the kind of images you want to share as they are very much behind the scenes. This is why we provide a same day slide show of images, which we edit at your wedding and show you on the same day at your wedding. These are then updated the next day to act as your wedding preview. Meaning you have fully edited images from your photographer the day after your wedding.
Things to consider when hiring a content creator
So you’ve decided you want to hire a content creator for your wedding day, there’s a few things to think about. Are they insured? As a relatively new wedding vendor type they may not be aware they need insurance, most wedding venue’s will ask for this. Are they experienced in how weddings work? How many wedding’s have they worked at? Weddings can be fast paced, knowing how things tend to happen helps. Do you like them? You need to get on well with them to feel happy having them at your wedding.
In conclusion
In a world full of social media content creators feel like an inevitable new service which may couples may want. They can add an extra element of footage to your wedding day. They don’t replace your videographers who will create a beautifully edited mini film of your day. Or your photographer who will capture and edit photos which you want to print and display or place in a wedding album to share with loved ones. They can be a nice add on service.
