When your bride and groom return for a newborn shoot

Sep 28, 2020 | Uncategorized

When baby C’s mum got in touch to say they were expecting a baby and wanted a newborn shoot, to say I was excited was to put it mildly. Last year I had the huge honour of photographing their wedding, so being able to meet and photograph their baby was truly exciting.

Little baby C was due to have her newborn shoot in early June, we’d provisionally booked it in for their 1st wedding anniversary, I was honored they wanted to share such a special day with me. Then as we all know the world learned about Covid-19, it arrived and the UK went into lockdown. As the weeks passed and Baby C’s due date crept closer we kept in touch. Little one decided to arrive early she just couldn’t wait to see the world. I had to wait until she was a full 8 weeks old to meet her, when we could finally carry out her newborn photo shoot.

As any parent knows there is a huge difference between how sleepy a one week old baby is compared to a much more alert 8 week old. Little C was loving looking around the new room, exploring all the new sights and sounds. As she’d not really seen many people due to the lockdown she found me particularly exciting to stare at. With her age in mind, we focused on getting cheeky smiles and open eye shots. Baby C did not disappoint, she was smiling away, always keeping an eye on where we all were, she even spoiled us by having a little snooze.

Baby C’s parents wanted a pink and cream colour scheme, so I made sure to knit some pretty pink teddys, bonnets, and babygrows for her. Our only problem came when trying to wrap her for the snuggly shots. She was much longer, wider, and stronger than a newborn, making wrapping her extra challenging, but we got there in the end and she even obliged us with a little nap.

Obviously, we can’t avoid the elephant in the room, Covid-19. The shoot was a little different from normal. I would normally be very hands on with your baby, settling and soothing them when needed. It’s not unusual for parents to nap themselves while I work with their babies. Obviously, this was not possible with the current restrictions, there was also extra PPE for me. I’ve always cleaned the studio and props after each newborn visit as babies’ health and safety has always been my priority, so this had not changed. So we had a slightly different shoot with an older newborn but we created beautiful images and memories for the family.
