Pregnancy is one of the most extraordinary times in your life. Your body changes every week, your bond with your baby grows stronger, and there’s a beautiful mix of excitement, nerves and emotion. Many mums reach out asking the same question:
“When is the best time to have my maternity photoshoot?”
As a maternity photographer in Milton Keynes who has photographed hundreds of mums-to-be — and as a mum myself — I can tell you that timing makes a big difference. This blog will guide you through the ideal window, what affects timing, what to expect physically, and how to plan your shoot so you feel confident and comfortable.
🌸 Why 28–34 Weeks Is Ideal
Most mums-to-be book their photoshoot for around 28 to 34 weeks. During this window:
✔ Your bump is beautifully round
By this stage, your pregnant belly has a defined, flattering shape that photographs beautifully from every angle.
✔ You still feel reasonably comfortable
You’re usually past the nausea and tiredness of the first trimester, but not yet in the discomfort of the final few weeks.
✔ Movement and flexibility are still good
Standing, sitting, lying sideways, and gentle posing feels easier in this window, giving us more variety in your gallery.
✔ Energy levels tend to be higher
Your bump may be big, but your energy hasn’t dipped yet, making the experience much more enjoyable.
🌸 Earlier Sessions (20–27 Weeks)
There are some situations where earlier sessions work wonderfully:
✔ First-time mums
First pregnancies often show a little later, so an earlier session ensures your bump is visible.
✔ Petite body types
If your bump is neat and compact, we may schedule slightly later or earlier depending on how your shape develops.
✔ High-risk pregnancy
If you are under consultant care, expecting twins, or advised to limit movement later, booking sooner may be more comfortable and safer.

🌸 Later Sessions (35–38 Weeks)
Later sessions are still possible — and can look absolutely breathtaking — but there are some things to consider:
✔ You may feel more tired
Posing, standing, and movement can feel more challenging near the end of pregnancy.
✔ Baby may have dropped
Your belly shape changes as your baby moves lower, creating a different profile.
✔ You may experience swelling or discomfort
Some mums prefer to photograph earlier to avoid this.
That said, I’ve captured many mums at 36–38 weeks and the photos are gorgeous. If you feel well enough, it’s absolutely doable.
🌸 What If You’re Having Twins or Multiples?
Twin mums typically show earlier and carry differently.
For multiples, I recommend sessions between:
✔ 24–30 weeks
Your bump will be beautifully shaped and you’ll likely feel more comfortable earlier in the pregnancy than later on.
🌸 What If You’re Booking Last-Minute?
Don’t panic — I can often work you in, especially if you’re flexible on weekdays.
It’s always worth asking, because cancellations or early newborn arrivals sometimes open new spaces.
🌸 What Affects the Best Timing for Your Shoot?
⭐ How quickly your bump grows
Some mums “pop” early, others stay neat until very late. This is why I always adapt the recommendation to your unique pregnancy.
⭐ Whether this is your first pregnancy
Second, third, and fourth pregnancies often show earlier — so we may schedule sooner.
⭐ Whether you want outdoor photos
For outdoor maternity shoots in Milton Keynes, we also consider:
- Sunset times
- Weather patterns
- Seasonal colour (spring blooms, summer greens, autumn golden tones)
⭐ Your comfort
If you’re experiencing:
- SPD / pelvic pain
- Backache
- Fatigue
- Swelling
…we may adjust earlier to support your mobility and comfort.
🌸 When Should You Book Your Session?
Even though the shoot happens around 28–34 weeks, I recommend booking:
✔ As soon as you’ve had your 12-week scan.
Why?
- My diary fills several months in advance
- Many sessions require wardrobe fittings
- You get first choice of dates
- If you’re booking maternity + newborn together, we secure both
Booking early also reduces stress later in pregnancy when you’re juggling appointments, baby prep, and energy levels.
🌸 Can Partners & Children Join In?
Absolutely. Family involvement adds so much emotion and meaning to your images.
We lightly plan:
- Your outfit
- Partner’s outfit
- Children’s clothing
- Posing that feels natural
- Matching tones for a cohesive look
The timing window is still the same — 28–34 weeks — and this allows younger children to participate before the very final weeks when you may feel more tired.

🌸 What Happens During the Session?
Your session is calm, relaxed, and fully guided.
We’ll:
- Choose gowns from my studio wardrobe
- Try a mix of soft natural posing
- Create some dramatic flowing-fabric portraits
- Capture partner or family moments
- Use flattering natural light or soft studio lighting
- Photograph you from several angles
Throughout, I’ll show you the most flattering poses and keep everything comfortable.
🌸 The Final Word — The Best Week Is the One Where You Feel Beautiful
While 28–34 weeks is the ideal guideline, the truth is simple:
👉 The best time for maternity photos is when your bump is beautifully rounded and you feel ready to celebrate your pregnancy.
