When should I book my wedding photographer?

The simple answer to this question is as soon as you have a confirmed wedding date and venue.

Every autumn I see a pattern when speaking to couples at wedding fairs. The couples’s getting married next year are shocked to find they are struggling to book a wedding photographer. By autumn I, like most wedding photographers will already have lots of bookings for the next 2-3 years, with the following year almost fully booked. So often peak summer dates for the next year are already booked at this point. I help where I can suggesting other photographers but the reality is they are probably also booked already.

The other pattern I see at wedding fairs is couple’s getting married not next year, but the year after. They feel they have plenty of time and there is no rush to book. The heartbreaking thing is I know I will see many of those couples again at next year’s wedding fairs and they will be struggling to find a photographer they like and disappointed to discover I’m already booked on their wedding date. This just adds stress to their planning which could have been easily avoided by booking earlier.

Then finally I see the couple’s at fairs who are actively looking for a photographer, they have a date and a venue and they are ready to add the next bit to their wedding. These couples arrange to meet me again in a less chaotic environment to chat about their day and see if I am the right fit. Some book there and then others go and have a chat and then get back in touch to book. I don’t put on any pressure to book me at a consultation, it really is just a friendly chat about your wedding plans. I’ll even help you with the planning if you like.

We live in a world of same day deliveries, I can order something to arrive today. So with that level of convenience and availability, it can be a shock to realise that your dream wedding photographer was already booked 2 years ago for your wedding date.

If photography and recording your memories is a priority for you start reaching out to wedding photographers as soon as you can. I have had couples change their wedding date as I was not free on their original date. That’s how hard it can be to find a photographer you love. Most wedding photographers, myself included offer a low deposit to secure us for your wedding. Giving you peace of mind that your wedding day memories are secure.
